There were multiple airports within 200 km of the incident, yet the plane was sent to Aktau, over 450 km away across the Caspian Sea. It seems they hoped the plane would crash in the sea. Only the incredible bravery and professionalism of the pilots (RIP) saved nearly half of the passengers. 🤔

Russian air defenses potentially misidentified the Azerbaijan Airlines jet as a long-range Ukrainian attack drone, a US official told CNN, adding that the holes on the side of the aircraft are also consistent with shrapnel damage from an explosion. This comes a day after an official told CNN that early indications suggest a Russian anti-aircraft system may have downed the passenger jet.
